An honest comparison

Officium Mentalevs the VA's PTSD Coach app.

PTSD Coach is a free self-management app from the VA's National Center for PTSD. Here is what it does better, where it stops, and how a structured self-inquiry course fits next to it.

What PTSD Coach does better

In-the-moment tools. It carries grounding and relaxation exercises, positive self-talk and anger-management tools you can use the minute a symptom spikes, and you can load your own photos, music and contacts into them.

Tracking and crisis access. A brief self-assessment you can repeat over time, symptom tracking, plain information about PTSD and treatment options, and the Veterans Crisis Line (988, press 1) one tap away. It is free on iOS and Android, with a desktop version, and it was built by the people who treat PTSD.

If you have PTSD symptoms, keep it on your phone. Nothing here replaces it.

Where it stops

It is built around symptoms: notice one, pick a tool, bring it down, track it. That is the right design for a coping app. It is not designed to ask, in order, over weeks, how your mind turned an event into a meaning — or to give the spouse beside you the same questions.

It is also for one condition. A lot of what happens at home after service is not PTSD; it is an automatic reaction that arrives before the reason, and it belongs to the whole house.

What Officium Mentale adds

A sequence, not a toolbox. Twenty narrated lessons through ten stages, from Observe to Become, each ending in the same three written questions — Notice · Explore · Connect — so the skill compounds instead of resetting with every episode.

Something to carry into the room. The Connect question becomes a Provider Conversation Sheet, so the appointment PTSD Coach tells you to make starts with a question you have already written down.

Built for the family too. Veterans, spouses, parents and caregivers use the same course in the same language.

Using both

PTSD Coach for the spike; this course for the pattern. Many learners are in VA care already — tell your provider you are working through it and bring the sheet.

The Introduction and Lesson 1 are free with no account; after that it is $7 a lesson, $19 a module, $47 for all twenty, paid once. If a lesson is not for you, tell us within 30 days and we will refund it.

Questions

Is Officium Mentale part of the VA or connected to PTSD Coach?
No. PTSD Coach is a VA product; Officium Mentale is an independent, veteran-owned Texas company and is not affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Can I use both?
Yes. Keep PTSD Coach for symptoms in the moment and use the course to work on the patterns underneath, between appointments.
Does the course treat PTSD?
No. It is non-clinical behavioral-health education. It does not diagnose or treat anything. If symptoms are interfering with daily life, the VA or another licensed provider is the right door.
What if I'm in crisis?
Call or text 988 and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line, 24/7. Neither an app nor a course is the right tool for that moment.

In Crisis?

If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or visit 988lifeline.org. For veteran-specific support, contact the Veterans Crisis Line at 988, then press 1.
